AKA the Bloody Lady of Cachtice, Elizabeth was a sixteenth-century Hungarian noblewoman turned torturer and serial killer who ended her days in incarceration. A violent sadist and self-proclaimed practitioner of black magic, she is thought by some to have murdered hundreds of young virgins and bathed in their blood, which she believed to possess rejuvenating powers. However, more recent research has suggested that this story emerged out of a belief that women were incapable of such violent acts for their own sake and must have been driven by vanity…

It has been suggested that Elizabeth may have been an inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.
